Parent Tip: How to Make Slime

Parent Tip: How to Make Slime

Making slime is a bit like a science lesson meets cooking activity, as the creation of slime involves a chemical reaction between the slime ingredients being mixed together - primarily the borax changing the structure of the PVA glue (polymer) making it thicker. Our popular slime recipe for beginners is a simple how-to guide so that you can make your own slime at home for your children to enjoy. Your kids will love stretching and squishing slime. Experiment with your slime recipe to play with different textures and consistency.

You will need the following materials to be able to make your own slime at home:

  • Borax
  • White PVA Craft Glue
  • Water
  • Glitter and/or sparkles and/or confetti
  • Food Colouring
  • Air tight storage containers
  • Bowls to mix ingredients

Step-by-step directions to make your own slime:

  1. Start by mixing one teaspoon of borax in a bowl with one cup of warm water.
  2. In another bowl pour 1/2 cup of glue with 1/2 cup of water and mix until combined.
  3. Add your desired decorations; food colouring, glitter, sparkles or confetti until you’re happy with the colour.
  4. Pour the glue mix into the borax mix.
  5. Stir this combined mix furiously.
  6. Once it combines together enough, put it on the table and knead it.

Remember that slime play is for outside, as it is messy, sticky but loads of fun! Slime should NOT be eaten due to the borax, but it is fine in small quantities to play with. Always wash your hands after playing with slime. Note that vinegar dissolves slime, so is good for cleaning up! Store your slime in air tight containers.

If you are interested in a simple non-borax slime recipe, then you can use Blu-Tack with hand soap to make a quick and simple stretchy slime. Simply combine one stick of Blu-Tack to 3 pumps of hand soap.
